Matthew Fox

Matthew Fox, a postmodern theologian, has been an ordained priest since 1967. He holds Masters degrees in philosophy and theology from Aquinas Institute and a Doctorate in spirituality, summa cum laude, from the Institut Catholique de Paris.

Fox is president of the new University of Creation Spirituality. Fox is author of 25 books, including the best-selling Original Blessing, A Spirituality Named Compassion, Passion for Creation: The Earth-Honoring Spirituality of Meister Eckhart, The Reinvention of Work, Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh and Natural Grace (with Rupert Sheldrake).

In addition to his work as a writer and teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area, Fox is a lecturer whose travels throughout North America, Europe and Australia have brought his message of ecological and social justice, mysticism and blessing to eager and ever-growing audiences. In June 1984 Friends of Creation Spirituality, Inc. was founded by Matthew Fox. The purpose of this organization was to educate the general public in creation-centered spirituality through the presentation of multimedia resources which include live performances, public forums and rituals and thus support the University of Creation Spirituality; and to reinvent worship through the Techno Cosmic Mass. In 1998 FCS purchased the Historic Sweets Ballroom here, In downtown Oakland, to fulfill this purpose.

Fox received the 1994 New York Open Center Tenth Anniversary Award for Achievement in Creative Spirituality. In 1995 he was presented the Courage of Conscience Award by the Peace Abbey of Sherborn, Mass. Other recipients of this award include the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Ernesto Cardenal, and Rosa Parks. In 1996 he received the Tikkun National Ethics Award in recognition of contributions made to the spiritual life of our society. Fox has twice received the Body Mind Spirit Award of Excellence for outstanding books in print: in 1996 for The Reinvention of Work and in 1997 for Confessions: The Making of a Post-Denominational Priest. In May 2000 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from The University College of Cape Breton, Sidney, Nova Scotia, Canada.

A review of his autobiography Confessions: The Making of a Post-Denominational Priest in the March 11, 1996, “Publishers Weekly” says, “This highly charged autobiography of a priestly life will stand as a lasting memorial to the difficulty of maintaining certain articles of faith and dogma at a time of shifting cultural paradigms. Fox’s portrait of himself…is likely to become a classic.”

Matthew Fox’s latest books are "One River, Many Wells" and "Creativity: Where the Divine and the Human Meet" published by Jeremy Tarcher, Inc.
