Historic Sweet's Ballroom
- Historic Sweet's ballroom is the permanent home of Friends of Creation Spirituality, Inc.
- Historic Sweet's Ballroom will provide a dramatic, inspirational environment for a variety of multiracial, interfaith organizations.
- Historic Sweet's Ballroom, 1933 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612
- Located across the street from the 19th Street BART
- A 12,000 square foot art deco dance hall built in the 1920's
- The ballroom accommodates 999 people
- History: The Italian Renaissance/Baroque Revival Architecture building began being built in September 1923 and was finished in March of 1924. Sweet's Ballroom was one of the best known ballrooms in the country during the Big Band Era of the 30's and 40's.
- Sweet's sat dormant for 17 years then BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) let the City of Oakland know that they wanted to buy the ballroom property, tear it down and build their corporate headquarters.
- To save the historic value and to encourage community events in downtown Oakland, FCS President Matthew Fox put a $50,000 down payment (from the equity on his house) on the ballroom property, and FCS had the ballroom for its rituals.
- We got the property: don't ask us how.
